One-Page vs Two-Page Resume: When to Use Each

The one-page resume rule is one of the most persistent myths in career advice. The truth is more nuanced: the right length depends on your experience level, your industry, and the seniority of the role you are targeting. Choosing the wrong length—in either direction—can cost you interviews.

1. The Experience Threshold

The simplest heuristic: if you have fewer than 8–10 years of relevant experience, one page is usually sufficient. Beyond that threshold, a second page becomes not just acceptable but expected. Trying to compress 15 years of progressive career growth into a single page forces you to omit achievements that could differentiate you.

The key word is relevant. If you have 12 years of experience but are pivoting to a new industry, a one-page resume focused exclusively on transferable skills may outperform a two-page history of an unrelated career. Length should serve relevance, not the other way around.

2. Industry Norms

Different industries have different expectations:

Seniority changes the calculus. A VP of Marketing applying for a CMO role needs space to demonstrate strategic impact, revenue influence, team building, and board-level communication. Condensing this into one page would strip the evidence that justifies a senior hire.

5. When Two Pages Are Justified

  • You have 10+ years of progressive experience in your field
  • The role is senior or executive level and requires evidence of strategic impact
  • Your industry expects detail (healthcare, government, academia)
  • You have significant certifications, publications, or technical projects to list
